For me, dietetics is about much more than providing nutritional advice. Sometimes the advice needs to be very specific - for example, when advising someone about following a gluten-free diet after a diagnosis of coeliac disease. However, many of the people I support now are living with complex health conditions, changing symptoms or changing life circumstances, where understanding the bigger picture is essential before deciding the most appropriate way forward.
Some people come to see me hoping that the answer is simply finding the right meal plan. Meal plans can be very helpful as practical examples and reference points, but on their own they rarely create lasting change. Without understanding why a particular approach has been recommended, or how to adapt it when life, symptoms or circumstances change, a meal plan can become just another set of instructions that fits some situations but leaves people feeling stuck or uncertain when those situations change.
My approach is different. I want people to understand the thinking behind the recommendations we make together. That way, they don't simply leave with a plan to follow—they leave with the confidence to make informed decisions, adapt those ideas to real life and navigate future challenges with greater confidence.
One of the most rewarding moments in my work is when someone pauses and says, "Oh... I see." It's often a quiet moment, but an important one. Not because I've given them all the answers, but because together we've made sense of something that previously felt confusing or overwhelming.
I've found that when people feel heard, understood and safe enough to explore their situation without judgement, they often begin to develop ideas of their own. My role is to encourage those ideas, build on them and help shape them into practical strategies that work in everyday life.
For me, good dietetic care is about supporting people to recognise the strengths they already have, build on those strengths, and develop the knowledge, confidence and skills to support their health long after our work together has finished.
